Itinerary of the 8-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climbing Package
Day 1: Lemosho Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
The journey begins at the Lemosho gate, located on the western side of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trek to Mti Mkubwa camp takes about 3–4 hours, covering a distance of 7 km through the lush rainforest. The trail is relatively flat, making it a gentle start to the climb. The camp is situated at an altitude of 2,650 meters, where the temperature drops significantly during the night.
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp
The second day involves a 6-7-hour trek covering 8 km. The trail gradually ascends through the heather and moorland zones, offering stunning views of the Shira Plateau. The camp is located at an altitude of 3,500 meters, where the oxygen level is noticeably lower.
Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp
On the third day, climbers trek for about 3–4 hours, covering a distance of 8 km across the Shira Plateau. The trail is relatively flat, but the altitude increases to 3,810 meters at Shira 2 camp. The vegetation becomes sparser, and the temperature drops further.
Day 4: Shira 2 Camp to Barranco Camp
The fourth day is a crucial day for acclimatization. Climbers ascend to the Lava Tower at 4,600 meters before descending to Barranco Camp at 3,976 meters. This "climb high, sleep low" strategy helps the body acclimatize to the decreasing oxygen levels.
Day 5: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The fifth day involves conquering the Barranco Wall, a challenging but rewarding climb. The trail then descends to the Karanga Valley before ascending again to Karanga Camp at 4,000 meters.
Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
On the sixth day, climbers ascend to Barafu camp at 4,673 meters. The trail becomes steeper and the air thinner, making this part of the climb particularly challenging.
Day 7: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
The seventh day is summit day. Climbers begin their ascent to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters, in the early hours of the morning. After reaching the summit, climbers descend to Mweka camp at 3,068 meters.
Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
The final day involves a descent to Mweka Gate. The trail passes through the rainforest zone, completing the climactic journey. From the Mweka gate, climbers are transported back to Moshi/Arusha.
